Prayer Walks

When: July 19

Prayer walking helps us experience God’s presence as we move, gives us space to listen, and helps us use our senses to become aware of the things God wants to show us. Each month this summer, we will offer you a prompt from Romans 12 as a way to help you pray for yourself, your neighbors, and your city. Set aside at least 30 minutes to walk and follow the prompts below.

Choose a location: Is there a neighborhood or a place in nature that you are drawn to?
Today’s focus:  Love must be sincere.
Prepare: Read Romans 12:9-21 slowly. Read again a second time.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Begin your walk:
Ask:What or whom in my life do I find easy to love? In what ways could I extend love to those I find hard to love?

Listen: Spend time quieting your mind and heart as you walk and listen for the Holy Spirit.

Pray: {Pray this prayer after you finish walking}

Lord, you are the God of perfect love.

Lord, grow love in me where there is no love. I confess the ways I have withheld my love {silently confess here}.

Create in me a clean heart, O Lord, and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)

Lord, thank you for loving me and for the power of your Holy Spirit that helps me.

Please show me the places you would like me to extend your love and give me the courage to do so. I specifically ask for your help in loving {name the person or people placed on your heart today}. Amen.
